Where we stand

Since the July 18th announcement from Finance Minister Bill Morneau, tax changes have been front and center in the news. A number of amendments to the legislation have been subsequently announced.

The original announcement was in the form of a 62-page white paper drafted by the Department of Finance that proposed multiple amendments to the legislation to target three perceived abuses of the tax system. On October 2nd, 2017, the 76-day consultation period ended with the government having received a reported 21,000 submissions from Canadians.

The tax and business community has indicated that these proposed changes are complex and broad in who they impact.
